Here's a quick way to find a lot of useful info on your BB. Alt-shift-h. Hit and hold these three keys in succession then release.

A screen entitled "Help Me!" will be displayed. Some of the info you will find: PIN, IMEI, uptime, battery level, which OS you're running, and amount of onboard memory available.

Contest! One Free Copy of Wallpaper Shuffle!

*UPDATE: Sorry everyone, and by everyone, I mean all of you who commented on this post for the contest ......cricket.....cricket....... tumbleweed........ dry cough. So I decided to use this Wallpaper Shuffle App now since I have updated to OS 5.0 and the app has also been updated.

But, do not despair! I found a cheap alternative. When I say cheap, I actually mean free. Its called Wallpaper Changer Lite and you can find it at the Crackberry.com App Store here: http://software.crackberry.com/productMobile.asp?id=40632. This one also only works on OS 4.7 or 5.0.*

I just won a contest on www.crackberry.com for an app that rotates your wallpaper. The problem is, it only works on BB's running OS 4.7. So that means it will work if you have a Storm 9500/9530 or a Tour 9630.

The app is called Wallpaper Shuffle. Check it out here: http://software.crackberry.com/product.asp?deviceid=1057&id=23695&n=WallpaperShuffle

To enter the contest: leave a comment on this post about why you have to have this app. I will check out each comment and decide on a winner.

For those who don't win, the app sounds pretty cool and its relatively cheap at $2.95.

Remember, it will only work on a Storm or a Tour.

Let it begin!!!

The New Storm 9550 In Action...Kind Of

Check out the new Storm 9550 in action. Its still in the very early stages of development, but it looks promising. I'm not a huge fan of the current Storm as it is slow and a little buggy. Hopefully, this new model brings with it software improvements along with the better hardware.

Does it still have the clicking screen like the current Storm? Check out the video to find out.

Who wants one?

Pac-Man - Free Game Has Been Updated

This free game has been around for a while, but I just learned of the new version that supports higher resolutions for the newer devices.

Its a great clone of the original pac-man game. You can use the trackball or keyboard to navigate and can play with or without sound.

You can also find Tetris and a couple of other apps at that link.

Enjoy!

BerryScanner: Turns Your BB Into A Police Scanner

BerryScanner is a FREE (***EDIT: It looks like this app is unfortunately no longer free. See comment below) app that turns your berry into a police and fire scanner. Its totally free and simple to use. The locations are limited here in Canada, but there are many to choose from in the U.S. including the one above. That's a screenshot from my 8900 running the app. I've found the most active channel is Dallas, Texas Police and Fire. Lots o' crime down there I guess.

Its quite fun to listen to live police chatter from all over the place. The app does drain the battery fairly quickly and does use data. But if you're like me, the data part shouldn't matter much. I have the 500MB data plan on Rogers and I never come close to using it all. I average just over 100MB a month and I would consider myself a heavy user. You can also monitor how much data you've used as you listen. I usually listen to it while streaming over wi-fi and when its plugged in.

Another fun aspect of this app is that you can run it while you're out and people will think you're important. Strap on a fake radio and throw in some "10-4"s and "roger that"s at key times, and you'll be an undercover cop to everyone around. I might even pick up a badge from the dollar store, tie it to a string, and put it around my neck for effect.

Check it out and let me know your adventures: http://ota.berryscanner.com/

You probably will have to configure your APN settings after installing the app to make sure it works. There are instructions at the above link.

Invite Friends/Colleagues to Calendar Events

There's a great feature built right in to your BB Calendar application. Its called "Invite Attendee" and it can be extremely useful. You can choose which email account to send from and you can send the invite to as many recipients as you like. I used this feature all the time when I was running my own renovation business to coordinate estimates and jobs with my colleague.

Its very simple to use. Simply enter the details of the event, hit menu and select Invite Attendee. Then select a contact. Repeat to add more recipients.

An email will be sent to the recipient(s). If they have a BB, the appointment will automatically be added to their calendar. The recipient(s) can choose from several different options:
  1. Accept
  2. Accept with Comments
  3. Tentative
  4. Tentative with Comments
  5. Decline
  6. Decline with Comments
Try it out and let me know what you think.

The Future of BlackBerry - No Trackball!

Ever have your trackball get stuck or stop going one direction? As much as I love the new line of BlackBerry Smartphones out there, the trackball is definitely their downfall. I can't even count how many times I have lost precious lives in BrickBreaker due to a dusty, malfunctioning trackball.

There is hope. I think RIM finally figured out the main reason for returns and warranty replacements is the trackball. The next generation of BlackBerrys is rumored to have an OPTICAL TRACKPAD instead of a trackball. I think, if this is done correctly, this could be the ultimate solution to all of our trackball woes.

The image above is of the Curve 8520. I'm not sure when it will be released, but I look forward to seeing more and more trackpads replacing trackballs.

If nothing else, its a step in the right direction. More info and pics at this link: http://www.gadgetvenue.com/blackberry-curve-8520-optical-trackpad-leaked-pics-05044143/

What do you think? Is this a good thing? Remember, anyone can comment.

Tunewiki: Free Music Player That Displays Lyrics!

There a new app in App World that is a music player that displays the album artwork and the lyrics to the song as it plays. Not all songs have lyrics displayed though. I've only tested a few, but it seems like the popular songs do, and some more obscure songs can't be found. Either way, its a free app and it might prevent embarrassment the next time you're belting out the lyrics to your favorite song.

Check it out in App World under the Top Downloads section. Last I checked it was #23.
