Berry Holiday 2.0. Amazing Free Theme From Crackberry and Zach the ZMan

I highly recommend checking out this great theme. I just installed it and I may never change my theme again.

I am very picky when it comes to themes and this one totally exceeded my expectations. The homescreen looks very clean and uncluttered. There are three hidden docks. Two of which are fully customizable. To access them scroll up or down.

This theme will be on my Javelin long after the stuffing is gone!

Thanks CB and Zach the Zman! Merry Christmas!

Download the theme here:
http://software.crackberry.com/productMobile.asp?id=44835&rate=5

It is compatible with newer BB's running 4.6, 4.7 and 5.0 software.

BlackBerry Data Is Down!

UPDATE: The outage was cause by newer versions of BBM. Particularly 5.0.0.55 and 5.0.0.56. There is a new version available that supposedly fixes everything. Get it here on your BB browser: www.blackberry.com/messenger

I noticed something weird going on earlier today with my BlackBerry Messenger. I wasn't getting the usual delivered and read notifications.

I tried rebooting, switching connection types and fervent prayer, but nothing was working. So I called BB technical support and sure enough, its not just me having problems. There is a prerecorded message after you get transferred to tech support that says they are having problems with their data service and are working on a solution.

I have done a bit of research and they are saying it could be fixed in anywhere between 3hrs and a DAY. Not cool. I'm paying for a data plan and expect to be able to use it anytime.

I hope I wake up tomorrow with many many messages signifying the end to this madness. The sweet sound of my notifications will bring tears to my eyes for sure. Or I will wake up to complete silence and isolation and wallow in despair.

Berry Christmas everyone!

BlackBerry Messenger Updated Again 5.0.0.55

BlackBerry Messenger has been updated yet again to version 5.0.0.55. Here's what Adam Zeis had to say about it over at Crackberry.com:

BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.0.55 is now officially available. The update includes some small tweaks here and there, including picture previews, smaller status text, improved groups and more. The update will install right over your older version, but we highly recommend a full backup before you get going. You can snag the new version in BlackBerry App World or by heading over to blackberry.com/messenger on your device browser.

Paid And Free Themes Now Available On BlackBerry App World!

This would be hard to miss if you've been on App World lately, but themes have finally arrived on App World. Many are featured on the main screen, but you can also go to categories and select themes from there. There are more free ones than I expected.

For more info on themes and how to install them, check out this tutorial from an earlier post: http://jsbbblog.blogspot.com/2009/04/how-to-change-your-theme.html.

Put Flags For Almost Any Country In BlackBerry Messenger 5.0

In the newest version of BBM, you can add flag icons from almost any country in the world. Its very simple. Its the 2 letter country code with a * before and after.

For example: The Canada flag would be *ca*
USA - *us*
Japan - *jp*
Finland - *fi*
Fiji - *fj*

Just type the codes as above then hit space and the flag icon will appear.

I found a website with all the country codes here: http://www.modemsite.com/56k/_ccodes.asp

Not all of them work in BBM. Most do, but I know for sure that Christmas Island (yes, that is a country) and Western Sahara do NOT work.

Have fun!

New UberTwitter Beta Pre-Release Released

Confused yet? The UberTwitter team has been working on a new version of the most popular twitter client for blackberry devices.

It was leaked before they intended, so they're rolling with it. This version works great and looks pretty slick. Lots of new features have been added. The "Uber Bar" at the top of the screen allows the user to quickly view replies and DM's. It can also be customized by adding favorites or lists.

RIM has updated BDM yet again with features added that were removed previously. Support has also been added for Windows 7 and the newest BlackBerry devices like the Storm 2 and Bold 9700. eBay App for BlackBerry Now Available

There's a new app in town. eBay for BlackBerry is available now in App World. You can search, bid, buy, watch items and more all from your device. The app gives you the option of adding items to you calendar so you don't miss the end of an auction, and will also send you alerts if you are outbid. You can even add your PayPal account so you can purchase items right from your device.

Sounds pretty slick. The app is still in the beta testing stages, so there are still a few bugs to be worked out.

Bold 9700: RIM's Best Blackberry Yet

When I first heard about the Bold 9700 and all the features included, I was impressed. Most previous Berrys were missing something; be it Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G, Camera or Trackpad. This 9700 has everything and more. The most surprising feature is number one on Al Sacco's (

MiniPaint Beta - Edit and Mess With Pics On Your BB

Here's a simple picture editing app for BlackBerry Devices. Its called MiniPaint. It allows you to add text or clipart to your pics and even resize them.

Apparently it has a few bugs to work out, but that is expected as it is still in the beta testing phase. It is free though, so take it or leave it.

It does work on the Storm in compatibility mode, but navigation is a bit of a hassle on all devices. This is the only app of its kind that I know of, but I expect there to be many competitors soon. It would be fun to have an app similar to the iPhone app that allows you to morph and mangle your pics.

Free Urbanspoon App For BlackBerry Now Available!

The extremely popular iPhone app, Urbanspoon, is now available for BlackBerry devices.

It looks great and works like it should. You can choose a location or use 'my location' which is detected automatically. There are 2 other categories to randomize or lock if you choose: Food type and Price. If you want to only look for low priced food in your city, click to lock the city and $. Then hit space to spin the middle tumbler. A restaurant will be chosen at random that fits those specifications.

From there you can select the restaurant for more information. By clicking on the phone number, you will automatically start calling the restaurant. If you click on the address, you will be taken to google maps or your default maps and shown the location on the map.

It will likely be showing up in App World soon, but for now you can grab it here: http://urbanspoon.com/blackberry.

Hippopost Mobile. Send FREE postcards directly from your BlackBerry!

Sounds too good to be true right? Select a picture from your BB, add a message, pick a contact from your address book, choose a sponsor, hit send and bam! Your picture will be uploaded, printed on a REAL postcard (with your chosen sponsor's name on it), and mailed to the recipient!

I've sent 3 to my home address for my wife and kids and I was very surprised at the quality and speed of delivery.

They're able to do it because of the sponsors. Mistubishi and Expedia foot the bill for printing and mailing in exchange for space on the front and back of the postcard. Its pretty unobtrusive though. I've also heard that they have improved speed of delivery and increased the picture size.

Check out the pics above of the app on my 8900 and one of the actual postcards.

I think its a great idea and the app works flawlessly. Check it out at App World or if you have a Storm, get it here: http://mobile.hippopost.com/

Facebook 1.7 Now Available!

Facebook for BlackBerry has been updated yet again and the change is actually noticeable.

The most important improvement is News Feed Support. Its looks more like the current FB on a computer browser.

At first, I thought this was kind of a rip-off cause I liked the status update filter which only showed status updates of friends and none of that other, mostly useless stuff. BUT if you look at the top where it says News Feed, its actually a drop down menu with these other options: Status Updates, Photos, Links.

I like where this is going. This version still supports the calendar and contact linking which is a great feature.

It is available for download at App World or here: www.blackberry.com/facebook.

Enjoy!

BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 Now Available for Download!!!

I'm installing the newest version of BBM right now. 5.0 has many improvements on previous versions.
Download it now on App World!
Here is some more info from BGR (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/):

The new BlackBerry Messenger includes a barcode scan to add contacts to your BlackBerry. Blackberry messenger 5.0 features a proximity sensor which will tell you how close you are to your friends, assuming of course, that both Berry’s were set to share location. Directly on the home screen, messenger contacts can be placed.

And of course, there is that ultra-cool bar code feature. It also provides PIN barcode scanning. And it will permit you to add your friend by just entering their PIN. Other features include threaded SMS support.

Blackberry messenger 5.0 New features include:

Avatar support — set your own avatar using the Camera or saved photo on your device (this is displayed locally as well as shown next to your Messenger name on your friend’s buddy list)

GPS location integration — you can now set permissions so friends can always see your location, have to request it each time, or never can see it

Proximity sensor — we’re guessing this will let you know if you’re within a certain distance of friends (pending, of course, you’re both set to share locations freely with each other)

Set conversation subjects — this will allow you to organize your convos on the main Messenger screen and label them with subjects to keep track of all your conversations

Homescreen support — you can pin/sticky actual Messenger contacts directly to the homescreen for easy access!

Sounds sweet to me! I'm rebooting now, anxiously awaiting the chance to try out this sweetness!
Remember, you can get it free at App World. Enjoy!

Gmail Actually Syncs Now?

I've been using Gmail on BB for over 2 years now and I could never figure out how to sync the messages. ie. When I read a message on the berry, it was still marked as unread when I was on gmail on my computer.

But miraculously today when I opened my gmail account (which I seldom do anymore) on my PC, the messages I had read during the day on my berry were marked as unread! Has anyone else experienced this?

Also, I've been posting a lot of twitter tweets that automatically feed to the blog. You'll find them on the right side. I find this is a very easy way to pass some quick info along to everyone out there in blog land.

How To Sync Your Berry With Outlook

I just started seriously using Microsoft Outlook 2007 mostly for the calendar feature. I knew that it could be synced with my 8900, but I had no idea how. After searching the BB Suport Forums, I found the solution which is quite simple.

I just found an even better tutorial on CrackBerry.com in the 101 Lecture Series section:

Check it out. Its great to have a real backup of all contacts, calendar entries, messages and even memos. The 2 way sync makes it nice to make sure you're always up to date.

9700 Onyx - The Ultimate BlackBerry...So Far

This is the face of the newest, and best BlackBerry to date. Its the 9700 and the code name for now is Onyx. It will be launching on AT&T and Bell in September if all goes as planned.

The first thing you'll notice about the 9700 is the optical trackpad instead of a pesky trackball which, as we all know, can be a hassle. ie. Getting dirty, not rolling smoothly, not rolling in one or more directions, etc.

From what I've heard about the trackpad, it is a huge improvement and takes very little getting used to.

The Onyx also boasts a 3.2 MP camera with autofocus and flash. Wi-fi, 3G and GPS. There's really nothing missing in this device.

Its about the same size as my beloved 8900 and has a Bold 9000 keyboard with those chrome frets between rows that everyone loves. It also has the Bold pleather back with an improved battery door. Not sure how its better, but it just is.

Anyway, I'm not pleased that it won't be coming to Rogers anytime soon. I really want to try that trackpad out.

Thoughts anyone?

4.) To lock caps Alt+right shift.

BlackBerry Watch?

Interesting idea. Could be cool, but seems like a little much for a bluetooth accessory. It would almost replace your BB, but you'd have to carry the BB around for the watch to work. I don't see it catching on. It does look cool though.

Where Did My Messages Go?

I came across a good article which explains why messages are sometimes automatically deleted from your BB.

I know how frustrating this can be as it happened all the time when I was using the Pearl 8100. Most of the newer devices have more on board memory which solves this problem.

Contest! One Free Copy of Wallpaper Shuffle!

*UPDATE: Sorry everyone, and by everyone, I mean all of you who commented on this post for the contest ......cricket.....cricket....... tumbleweed........ dry cough. So I decided to use this Wallpaper Shuffle App now since I have updated to OS 5.0 and the app has also been updated.

But, do not despair! I found a cheap alternative. When I say cheap, I actually mean free. Its called Wallpaper Changer Lite and you can find it at the Crackberry.com App Store here: http://software.crackberry.com/productMobile.asp?id=40632. This one also only works on OS 4.7 or 5.0.*

I just won a contest on www.crackberry.com for an app that rotates your wallpaper. The problem is, it only works on BB's running OS 4.7. So that means it will work if you have a Storm 9500/9530 or a Tour 9630.

The app is called Wallpaper Shuffle. Check it out here: http://software.crackberry.com/product.asp?deviceid=1057&id=23695&n=WallpaperShuffle

To enter the contest: leave a comment on this post about why you have to have this app. I will check out each comment and decide on a winner.

For those who don't win, the app sounds pretty cool and its relatively cheap at $2.95.

Remember, it will only work on a Storm or a Tour.

Let it begin!!!

Pac-Man - Free Game Has Been Updated

This free game has been around for a while, but I just learned of the new version that supports higher resolutions for the newer devices.

Its a great clone of the original pac-man game. You can use the trackball or keyboard to navigate and can play with or without sound.

You can also find Tetris and a couple of other apps at that link.

Enjoy!

BerryScanner: Turns Your BB Into A Police Scanner

BerryScanner is a FREE (***EDIT: It looks like this app is unfortunately no longer free. See comment below) app that turns your berry into a police and fire scanner. Its totally free and simple to use. The locations are limited here in Canada, but there are many to choose from in the U.S. including the one above. That's a screenshot from my 8900 running the app. I've found the most active channel is Dallas, Texas Police and Fire. Lots o' crime down there I guess.

Its quite fun to listen to live police chatter from all over the place. The app does drain the battery fairly quickly and does use data. But if you're like me, the data part shouldn't matter much. I have the 500MB data plan on Rogers and I never come close to using it all. I average just over 100MB a month and I would consider myself a heavy user. You can also monitor how much data you've used as you listen. I usually listen to it while streaming over wi-fi and when its plugged in.

Another fun aspect of this app is that you can run it while you're out and people will think you're important. Strap on a fake radio and throw in some "10-4"s and "roger that"s at key times, and you'll be an undercover cop to everyone around. I might even pick up a badge from the dollar store, tie it to a string, and put it around my neck for effect.

Check it out and let me know your adventures: http://ota.berryscanner.com/

You probably will have to configure your APN settings after installing the app to make sure it works. There are instructions at the above link.

Invite Friends/Colleagues to Calendar Events

There's a great feature built right in to your BB Calendar application. Its called "Invite Attendee" and it can be extremely useful. You can choose which email account to send from and you can send the invite to as many recipients as you like. I used this feature all the time when I was running my own renovation business to coordinate estimates and jobs with my colleague.

Its very simple to use. Simply enter the details of the event, hit menu and select Invite Attendee. Then select a contact. Repeat to add more recipients.

An email will be sent to the recipient(s). If they have a BB, the appointment will automatically be added to their calendar. The recipient(s) can choose from several different options:
  1. Accept
  2. Accept with Comments
  3. Tentative

The Future of BlackBerry - No Trackball!

Ever have your trackball get stuck or stop going one direction? As much as I love the new line of BlackBerry Smartphones out there, the trackball is definitely their downfall. I can't even count how many times I have lost precious lives in BrickBreaker due to a dusty, malfunctioning trackball.

There is hope. I think RIM finally figured out the main reason for returns and warranty replacements is the trackball. The next generation of BlackBerrys is rumored to have an OPTICAL TRACKPAD instead of a trackball. I think, if this is done correctly, this could be the ultimate solution to all of our trackball woes.

The image above is of the Curve 8520. I'm not sure when it will be released, but I look forward to seeing more and more trackpads replacing trackballs.

If nothing else, its a step in the right direction. More info and pics at this link: http://www.gadgetvenue.com/blackberry-curve-8520-optical-trackpad-leaked-pics-05044143/

What do you think? Is this a good thing? Remember, anyone can comment.

There a new app in App World that is a music player that displays the album artwork and the lyrics to the song as it plays. Not all songs have lyrics displayed though. Visor Mount Bluetooth Speakerphone and...

Just heard of this supercool accessory today. Its not only a bluetooth speakerphone for your car, its also an FM transmitter that streams your music through your car stereo! AND when you get a call, you have the option of using the built in speaker, or using your car speakers! It also supports voice activated dialing, caller ID and verbal notifications.

I think its pretty sweet. I've checked out a few reviews and everyone seems to like it. It sells for $119.99 CDN which isn't bad for what you get. It claims to run for 13hrs of talktime before needing a charge.

It also works with GPS mapping applications. I'm not exactly sure which ones though. More info on GPS functionality for BB here: http://jsbbblog.blogspot.com/2009/04/got-gps.html.

I better start saving. This seems to be the solution for those of us that have cars without bluetooth built-in.

Official OS Upgrade from Rogers for 8900

BlackBerry® Curve™ 8900
There's a new OS on the scene for the 8900, and its officiall supported by Rogers. This is a rare treat as most of the time, it takes forever for beta releases to become official. I've been testing it for a couple of days now, and its very stable and fixed a few minor issues I had with previous beta OS's. One thing it fixed was, now I can see all my videos in the main video screen. I convert a lot of movies and tv shows and they would disappear before and I would have to explore from the main media screen.

Anyway, thats fixed. The other thing I noticed is ringtone volume. Its not necessarily louder than before, but the difference between medium and high is more, which I like. The ringtone quality seems to be a tiny bit better as well.

Overall, its great to see an official OS upgrade thats not 2 years behind the beta release. I hope this is a trend for the future.

I'm looking forward to an official 5.0 OS with support for Facebook 1.6...or maybe FB 2.0 by that time. Either that or FB compatible with any 5.0.x.xx beta OS.

Here's a link to more info and the download: http://crackberry.com/official-os-releases-t-and-rogers

Or the direct download link is here:

https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=1905AEDAB9BF2477EDC068A355BBA31A This link can also be used to check for official OS upgrades for any other Rogers supported BlackBerry. Check it out.

After you download the file, install it to your computer and open your desktop manager. Then follow the prompts from there. It should alert you that a software upgrade is available. Make sure you backup your data before doing the upgrade.

The Price is Right Sound Effects!

I've been looking for one of these sound effects for a while now. The losing horns. You know when someone loses a game they get the buzz, then bah bah bah dah boooow. You'll know what I mean when you hear it.

I keep hearing it on a radio station here in Edmonton: Sonic 102.9FM. They play the sound effect whenever someone guesses the "Modern Rock Door" incorrectly. This happens a lot. Anyway thanks to Garner Andrews, the hilarious DJ, I was able to find way more than what I was looking for. Good talk this morning Garnie. Thanks!

I'm not sure which tone or notification I want to use this for yet, but I can't get enough of it. Its the 8th one down on the list. Maybe I could use it for my junk email account notification.

Here's a link to the download page: http://www.qwizx.com/gssfx/usa/price.htm

You can go to it on your BB and download the tones directly to your ringtone folder, or you can download them to your computer and transfer them via USB later. (See earlier post all about "Ringtones and Notifications.")

They even have the Yodelling song. Remember that one where the little guy is climbing the mountain? PRICELESS! (pun fully intended...is that even a pun?)

Thanks for the memories Bob! Does anyone else think Drew Carey is a terrible host? In my search for these sound effects I came across a quote from the retired legend that is Bob Barker.

"I think the thing I miss most about The Price Is Right is the applause. I retract that, the thing I miss most about The Price Is Right is the money."

Free SketchIt App (for a limited time)

Splash screen
This could be the most useful app you ever put on your BlackBerry. It works great on my Javelin 8900 and its a little addicting. I enjoyed Etch-A-Sketch ing back in the day and this simple little app brings back all those wonderful memories.

You can hit Space to clear what you've sketched and it vibrates for effect. You can also take a snapshot of your masterpiece by pressing Enter. Although I'm not sure where the snapshots are saved yet.

It says it will only be free for a little longer, so get it now and get sketching!
